Culturally Responsive Teaching

Cultural responsiveness is an approach to viewing students' culture and identity (including race, ethnicity, multilingualism, and other characteristics) as assets, and creating learning experiences and environments that value and empower them. We train on:

Academic achievement: Educators hold high, transparent expectations for all students, and support the development of students' academic skills and identities as learners.

Cultural Competence: Educators understand culture's role in education, their students' cultures, and their own identity and biases to 1) affirm students' backgrounds and identities and 2) foster their ability to understand and honor others' cultures.

Sociopolitical Awareness: Educators and students partner to identify, analyze, and work to solve systemic inequities in their communities and the world.

Social Emotional Learning

SEL is the process of developing students' and adults' social and emotional competencies-the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that individuals need to make successful choices.  We offer SEL training in the following areas:

Free-standing lessons that provide explicit, step-by-step instructions to teach students social and emotional competencies across the five core competency clusters

General teaching practices that create classroom and school-wide conditions that facilitate and support social and emotional development in students

Integration of skill instruction and practices that support SEL within the context of an academic curriculum

Guidance to administrators and school leaders on how to facilitate SEL as a school-wide initiative

Restorative Justice

A multi-tiered approach, guided by principles of engagement, individual and mutual responsibility, and restoration.  Effective implementation of RJ practices has been shown to improve school climate, culture, and academic performance; they have reduced behavioral referrals, suspensions, and expulsions. We currently:
